Employment

Persons with a dedication to human services and an interest in communal living are sought for full-time residential positions in the permanent homes of adults who have disabilities due to the aftermath of traumatic brain injuries. Building a Bridge, Inc. operates a supportive community of several such homes in the downtown Charlottesville area. Each home in Building a Bridge operates autonomously, yet is guided and supported by senior staff. The mission and unique opportunity of the program is for the members of the various homes to involve themselves in one another’s lives and support each other as a community.

Within the household, the primary role of staff persons is to share in the daily activities of the residents in ways that provide the supports necessary for their living well-rounded lives. This role involves getting to know and honoring each resident’s unique gifts and needs, living as a friend in their home environment, scheduling work, and social activities. The staff person/s is also responsible for creating opportunities for residents to prove their skills and interests or acquire new ones. Furthermore it is required to arrange transportation, work within a house budget, keep records, oversee medications and routine visits for medical checkups, and facilitate social interactions among all our residents. It is essential to support the family atmosphere of the home, and to contribute one’s own special gifts to the household and the community of Building a Bridge.

The staff person’s will share a home with three permanent residents of the program and will maintain close contact and relationship with the family of the residents.

In addition to the rich personal experience of sharing one’s life in such a community, Building a Bridge provides staff persons with housing and utilities, a food allowance (as a portion of the monthly house budget), an automobile for job-related driving (including insurance, gas, and repairs), annual contributions toward medical insurance costs and out-of-pocket medical expenses, a salary, and vacation.

Applicants must have excellent personal references and a valid driver’s license.
